Fascinating Character--Helen Keller

"Literature is my Utopia. Here I am not disenfranchised. No barrier of the senses shuts me out from the sweet, gracious discourses of my book friends. They talk to me without embarrassment or awkwardness." ~Helen Keller

Helen Keller is famous. She was deaf, dumb, and blind, but brilliant. Her story of how she overcame her disabilities through the loving-but-stern therapies of Ann Sullivan is ubiquitous, made famous by the movie The Miracle Worker starring Patty Duke and Ann Bancroft. Helen also wrote books. According to Wikipedia, she was the first deaf-blind person to earn a B. A. degree, and was a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Yes, her politics leaned to the left!  BTW, I agree with this quote wholeheartedly.

Her Wikipedia page. Her Amazon Books.

Here is a rare clip of Helen and Ann from a 1928 Newsreel.

  1. I read the book in school. I always liked it. I should find it and read it again.

  2. By "the book," I suppose you mean The Story of My Life.
